Caleb Martin 2023-24 Profile

While he hasn’t ascended to NBA stardom, Caleb Martin has produced an impressive first few years of his NBA career — especially when one considers what it took for him to get into the NBA. Martin — a 6 foot 5, 205 pound Forward who started his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets but now plays for the Miami Heat — still has some untapped potential that makes keeping track of his unfolding story an exciting endeavor. And while Caleb Martin probably isn’t primed to become an All-Star caliber player, he has been proving doubters wrong his entire life. Perhaps he has more surprises in store for us all.

Prior to the 2023-24 season, let’s take a look at where Caleb Martin came from, how he has fared in his four-year NBA career, and what we can expect from him in year five.

Caleb Martin Background

Caleb Martin was born on September 28, 1995, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. Martin played his high school basketball at the legendary Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, alongside his identical twin brother, Cody Martin. Both Martin brothers committed to play college basketball at North Caroline State University, but transferred out of there after their sophomore season in order to play at the University of Nevada, Reno. Here’s where Caleb (well, both Martin brothers) really thrived.

As a junior, Caleb Martin averaged 18.9 points per game in his first season Reno, and was named the Mountain West Conference’s Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. He then increased his scoring average during his 2019 senior campaign, posting 19.2 points per game.

Despite his collegiate success, Martin went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft. While this was a shocking development for the entire Martin family (especially because his brother, Cody, was selected in the 2nd round by the Charlotte Hornets), Caleb didn’t let the setback deter him. He continued to work harder than ever in order to realize his NBA dreams — which worked out once the Charlotte Hornets signed Caleb to a free agent contract a short time after the 2019 NBA Draft ended. With that, Cody and Caleb Martin were reunited — and their NBA careers began.

Martin’s NBA Career So Far

Caleb Martin made his NBA debut on October 25th, 2019, when he came off the bench for the Hornets and scored four points in a blowout loss. Martin went on to average 6.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over 18 games in his rookie season. However, Martin experienced some regression in year two, scoring only 5 points per game. This is likely why the Charlotte Hornets decided to release Martin after the 2021 season ended.

Yet, after what seemed like another setback, Martin emerged in an even better position. He signed with the Miami Heat just one month after the Hornets released him — and began to excel in Miami. In 2022, Martin’s per game averages jumped to 9.2 points per game, 3.8 assists, and 0.5 blocks with the Heat. He carved himself a nice role off the bench, providing timely scoring and hard-nosed defense when the team’s starters needed a rest.

Martin progressed even more in 2023, increasing his stats to 9.6 points per game, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists — all career highs. But that’s not all. Once the 2023 playoffs started, Martin began to play the best basketball of his life. During those playoffs, Martin scored 12.7 points per game, grabbed 5.4 rebounds per game, plus scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final, which the Heat won 103–84. Martin’s incredible Eastern Conference Finals performance was almost enough to win the series’ MVP award — although he ultimately came up one vote short to teammate Jimmy Butler.

Martin struggled against the Denver Nuggets in the NBA finals, only averaging 7.4 points per game as the Heat lost to the Nuggets in 5 games.

Which brings us to the 2023-24 season.

Caleb Martin 2023-24 Season Forecast

Especially after his performance in last season’s playoffs, all signs point to Caleb Martin  continuing that positive development in 2023-24. He has certainly solidified himself as a mainstay coming off the bench. While Martin has never been a true playmaker, and struggles to create offense for himself at times, the gritty on-ball defense he provides will remain invaluable for Miami.

The biggest question mark for Martin is whether he’ll be able to improve his three-point shooting. His role with the team makes it so he receives a lot of open looks from three — but he only made 33.3% of catch-and-shoot jumpers during the 2022-23 regular season. If Martin can improve that number to, say, 37-38%, his value will make another leap. And Miami Heat fans will fall even more in love with Martin than they already are.

I’d be willing to bet that Caleb Martin has spent all summer shooting threes. For that reason, I predict his three-point shooting percentage will improve a good deal in the 2023-24 season — which should bring his points per game average up to around 14. While this is a major upgrade from the 9.6 points per game he averaged during the 2022-23 regular season, last year’s playoffs proved that Martin has it in him. Now, all he needs to be is consistent, and Caleb Martin’s true ceiling might shock us all.
