Gabe Vincent 2023-24 Profile

Gabe Vincent — the 6 foot 2, 200 pound guard for the Los Angeles Lakers — might be the NBA’s best embodiment of the common phrase, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Which is not to say that Gabe Vincent isn’t talented. But considering the route Vincent has taken in order to not only make it to the NBA, but to continue to develop and thrive once he gets there, is a testament to how hard he works. He certainly isn’t the biggest player, nor the most athletic or skilled. But Gabe Vincent’s grit and heart is what sets him apart.

Vincent also has a way of making those he’s on the court with better; hence why he was been such an asset during his tenure with the Miami Heat.

In this article, we’ll discuss Gabe Vincent’s general information, his background before the NBA, how his NBA career has gone thus far, and what his role will look like with the Lakers in 2023-24.

Gabe Vincent General Information

Gabriel Nnamdi Vincent was born on June 14, 1996, in Modesto, California, United States. His parents are Franklyn and Cynthia Vincent, who both have doctorates in psychology. Gabe is also the youngest of three brothers, and is currently single.

On July 6, 2023, Gabe Vincent signed a 3-year, $33,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Lakers — making for an annual average salary of $11 million. Vincent’s net worth is estimated to be $8 million.

Gabe Vincent wears jersey number 7, and is a size 13 (US) shoe.

Gabe Vincent Background

Being the youngest of three brothers, Gabe Vincent spent most of his childhood competing with them in various sports; namely, basketball. Vincent attended St. Mary’s High School in Stockton. While Vincent succeeded while there, he wasn’t considered a top-tier prospect out of high school. Yet, Vincent did ultimately earn a scholarship to play college basketball at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Vincent won the Big West Conference Rookie of the Year in the 2014-15 season. In 113 games with UCSB from 2014 to 2018, Vincent averaged 12.8 points. Unfortunately, Vincent’s scoring average dipped from his junior to senior season, from 14.8 to 12.4 (although his field goal percentage increased by about 10%). Still, NBA scouts weren’t sure whether Vincent was athletic enough to perform at the next level. Therefore, Vincent went undrafted out of college.

Although Vincent did earn a contract with the Stockton Kings of the NBA G League during the 2018-19 season. In 24 games with the Kings, Vincent averaged 8.8 points in 18.6 minutes per game.

Vincent improved mightily in his second season with the Stockton Kings, averaging 23.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.30 steals per game and shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 41.2 percent from three-point range and 89.7 percent from the free throw line in 20 games.

As a result of his success in that 2019-20 season, Vincent signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat on January 8, 2020.

Gabe Vincent’s NBA Career So Far

Gabe Vincent made his NBA debut on January 29, 2020, against the Orlando Magic. Yet, because he was on a two-way contract, he continued to play in G League games throughout that 2020 season—averaged 20.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 31 G League games that year. On June 22, 2022, the NBA G League announced that Vincent won their Most Improved Player award.

On August 6, 2021, Gabe Vincent signed a standard contract with the Heat—and has remained in the NBA ever since. During that 2021-22 season, Vincent played in 68 games, started in 27 of them, and went on to average 8.7 points, 3.1 assists, 0.9 steals, 1.5 rebounds, and shoot 36.8% from three point range.

The Miami Heat made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in this 2021-22 season — and Gabe Vincent’s excellent defense (often guarding the other team’s best guard, in order to let teammate Jimmy Butler focus more on offense) proved to be a huge asset for the Heat. Vincent was also a factor on the offensive end, as well, averaging 8 points, 3.2 assists, and 0.8 steals in the 18 playoff games he played that season (8 of which were starts). Ultimately, the Heat lost to the Boston Celtics in 7 games in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Vincent put together another successful regular season with the Heat in 2022-23, playing in 68 games, starting in 34 of them, and averaging 9.4 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game. Yet, Vincent really shined during the 2023 NBA playoffs.

In Game 3 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, Vincent scored a playoff career high of 29 points in a 128–102 win to give the Heat a 3–0 lead over the Boston Celtics. In Game 2 of the 2023 NBA Finals, Vincent had a team-high 23 points in a 111–108 win over the Denver Nugget—which proved to be the only win for the Heat in the series. Vincent did, however, struggle from the 3 point line in the NBA Finals, shooting just 33% from there.

On July 6, 2023, Vincent signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. And so far in the 2023-24 season, Vincent is averaging 6 points, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals in 28.3 minutes per game.

Gabe Vincent is of Nigerian descent, and has played games for the Nigerian National Team. He represented Team Nigeria in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and scored 23 points against Poland (including the game-winning three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left) in a game on August 24, 2019.

Gabe Vincent 2023-24 Season Forecast

Gabe Vincent’s role has shifted with the Lakers, compared to what it was during his time with the Heat. After having started about half of the Heat games he played in, Vincent will be coming off the bench for the Lakers. Yet, due to his world-class defense (1.5 steals per game in 28.3 minutes played) and that he has proven the ability to shine on the biggest stages, Vincent will continue to play a valuable role for the Lakers. Vincent is also extremely durable, and could see himself becoming a starter if one of the Lakers guards gets injured at any point.

Regardless of how his 2023-24 season and beyond goes, one must applaud Gabe Vincent for how well he has done in the NBA. Nobody—aside from Gabe, perhaps—could have imagined that the kid who was barely recruited out of high school would eventually become an NBA mainstay. And what’s most impressive of all is that Vincent continues to improve. He’s only 27 years, after all; and with his work ethic, the sky is the limit for Gabe Vincent.
