Odell Beckham Jr.’s dynamic playmaking ability, combined with his flair for the dramatic, has made him one of the league’s most exciting players to watch. With incredible one-handed catches and a knack for finding the end zone, Beckham has solidified his position as an elite NFL receiver.
Odell Beckham Jr. 2023-24 Profile
After being one of the league’s most exciting young wide receivers between 2014 and 2020, Odell Beckham Jr. has fallen foul to the injury bug, greatly limiting his ability to stay on the field over recent years. Following a year out of the game, Beckham signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason. He joins a Ravens offense that is led by former MVP Lamar Jackson and will be hoping that he can help the team to their first division title since 2019.
Unfortunately, his bad luck with injuries has already popped up, with Beckham suffering an ankle injury in week 2 of the 2023 NFL season. He looks set to return soon though, with a return for the Ravens’ week 5 clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers not out of the equation.
The return of Beckham would be great news for a Ravens side that are currently sitting atop the AFC North, with only one loss to their name. The Cincinnati Bengals, who were favourites for the division coming into the season, have started very poorly, opening the door for a potential Ravens takeover. Can Beckham and the Ravens keep up the good form and secure an AFC North victory to propel them into the playoffs?
Odell Beckham Jr. Background
Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Odell Beckham Jr. was a talented competitor who excelled on the football field, basketball court and as a track and field athlete. His diverse physical skillset meant that he stood out from a young age, featuring as a quarterback, wide receiver, running back and cornerback at high school. He was a game-changer at each position and was named to the Times-Picayune 2011 Blue-Chip list and selected as a wide receiver for the Louisiana 2A All-State first-team.
Thanks to his incredibly productive high school career, Beckham was highlighted as a four-star recruit and gained attention from all of the biggest college programmes. Despite the various offers, Beckham chose to stay close to home and attend Louisiana State University, becoming a part of the prestigious LSU Tigers football programme.
Beckham had a steady start to his college career, contributing 41 receptions for 475 yards in LSU’s undefeated 13-0 season. The Tigers would make it to the National Championship game, which they would unfortunately lose to Alabama. Despite the disappointment, Beckham did finish the season with something to celebrate as he was named to the freshman All-SEC team.
After another solid year in 2012, it was his 2013 season where Beckham really put his name on the map. He posted 1,117 yards and 8 touchdowns, highlighted by a 204-yard, 2-touchdown performance against the Furman Paladians. Beckham was rewarded with a first-team All-SEC and All-American selection, in addition to being awarded the 2013 Paul Hornung Award as college football’s most versatile player, thanks to his success as a punt returner as well.
Following his successful 2013 campaign, Beckham opted to enter the NFL draft. He was a hot name in the draft community and was selected with the 12th overall pick by the New York Giants.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s NFL Career So Far
It didn’t take long for Odell Beckham Jr. to become one of the biggest names in the NFL. He was eased into his rookie season due to an injury that kept him out of the first four weeks, but he exploded onto the scene in style with 156 yards on 8 receptions in week eight. From then on, there was no looking back. Beckham topped the 100-yard mark in all but two of his remaining games, finishing the season with an incredible 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. It was a truly remarkable rookie season that saw him top 140 yards five times on his way to winning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The moment that people will remember most will be his incredible diving catch against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. With the world watching, Eli Manning started the second half by launching the ball up to his rookie receiver who was dashing along the right-hand touchline. After wrestling off a Cowboy defender, Beckham lept backwards to complete a one-handed catch that many still refer to as the greatest catch in the history of the NFL.
The catch went viral and Beckham became one of the hottest names in the NFL, with a personality to match his incredible on-field performances. That off-season, he became the youngest ever player to feature on the cover of Madden, emphasizing his new role as the bright star of the NFL.
His success would continue, improving to 1,450 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore, before posting 1,367 yards and 10 touchdowns in year three. It was three Pro Bowl appearances in a row for Beckham, who also achieved his best ranking on the NFL’s Top 100 list, coming in at number 8 in the 2017 edition.
An ankle injury in 2017 would end his season early and mark the beginning of an unfortunate catalogue of injuries that have derailed his career slightly. Beckham managed to return to post two more 1,000-yard seasons in 2018 and 2019, but he has unfortunately not come close since.
He has also bounced around the league a bit in the second half of his career, leaving the Giants for Cleveland in 2018, where he spent two and a half years. An ACL injury in 2020 put an early end to that campaign and he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams halfway through the 2021 season.
His time spent with the Rams was bittersweet. From a team perspective, Beckham achieved the highest prize in the sport, as the team won the Super Bowl in his first and only season with them. The downside to the story is that he tore his ACL for the second time in the season finale. He got his ring, but he also got another catastrophic injury at the worst time possible. His rehabbing process took him out of the entire 2022 season, before signing with the Ravens this offseason to give it another shot with a Super Bowl-ready side.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s 2023-2024 Season Forecast
At this point of his career, Odell Beckham Jr. will simply be looking to be a complimentary piece to a Ravens offense that has everything it needs to contend for a Super Bowl. He no longer has the athletic characteristics to be a number-one receiver, but he can absolutely chip in with some production and be a pain for defenses who already have to worry about Lamar Jackson, Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers.
He slots nicely into a very talented offense, and the Ravens’ defense is one of the best in the league. Beckham will hope that he can stay healthy and help the Ravens to an AFC North victory and a deep playoff run. Having already managed to win one Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, he will have his eyes on another ring here.
