Dalvin Cook 2023-24 Profile

Dalvin Cook — the 5 foot 10 inch, 210 pound running back for the New York Jets — was one of the NFL’s best, most consistent running backs just a couple years ago. And that’s not to say that Cook (who is still just 28 years old) is a shell of his former self. Rather, Cook just suffers from the same affliction that plagues all NFL running backs: they play a young man’s position. The wear and tear that comes with being a running back makes it so 28 is actually quite an old age for a running back. Yet, Cook has proven this season that he still has more left to give.

In this article, we’ll discuss Dalvin Cook’s general information, mention his pre-NFL background, take a look at how his NFL career has fared thus far, and predict what his 2023-24 season (and beyond) might look like.

Dalvin Cook General Information

Dalvin James Cook was born on August 10, 1995, in Opa-locka, Florida, USA. His parents are James Cook Sr. and Varondria Burnett. Dalvin’s brother, James Cook Jr., is also a running back in NFL, and plays for the Buffalo Bills.

Dalvin Cook is currently single, but his ex-girlfriend is Gracelyn Trimble, who served in the military and accused Cook of domestic abuse while they were dating. The investigation is still ongoing.

On August 14, 2023, Dalvin Cook signed a one year, $7,000,000 contract with the New York Jets. His net worth is estimated to be around $20 million.

Dalvin Cook wears jersey number 33.

Dalvin Cook Background

Dalvin Cook attended high school at Miami Central High School, but did not join the football team until his junior season. After sharing carries during his junior season, Cook broke out as a senior in 2013; rushing for a county-best 1,940 yards and 34 touchdowns on 177 carries (11 yards per rush) and intercepted 3 passes on defense. Once his senior season ended, Cook was named Mr. Florida Football.

Cook finished his high school career with 4,267 rushing yards and 64 touchdowns, while leading Miami Central to a 52–5 record. He played in the 2014 Under Armour All-America Game, where he rushed for 78 yards and scored 1 touchdown.

Cook received tons of interest from the country’s top collegiate football programs. After originally committing to Clemson University, then flipping to the University of Florida, Cook ultimately decided to attend college at Florida State University.

As a freshman in 2014, Cook split carries with other Florida State running backs. He finished the season with 1,008 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns, 22 receptions, and 203 receiving yards.

Cook took over as the lead back in 2015, and set a Florida State single-season record with 1,242 rushing yards. Overall, he finished the 2015 season with 1,691 rushing yards, 19 rushing touchdowns, 24 receptions, 244 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown.

As a junior, Cook was once again FSU’s lead back, and ultimately broke the Florida State record for career rushing yards, with 4,464. He finished his junior season with 1,765 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns, 33 receptions, 488 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown.

After his junior season, Cook announced that he would enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

While Cook had a solid NFL Scouting Combine, and was considered one of the best running backs in the draft, off-field concerns capped his draft stock at somewhere in the end of the first or early second round. Ultimately, Cook was selected in the second round (41st overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He was the third running back drafted.

Dalvin Cook’s NFL Career So Far

In his first NFL game, Cookset the Vikings’ rookie debut rushing record by rushing for 127 yards on 22 carries. Unfortunately, Cook tore his ACL during Week 4, and would miss the remainder of the 2017 season. In 4 games in his rookie year, Cook finished with 354 rushing yards.

Cook returned for the 2018 NFL season opener, and had 95 scrimmage yards. He then suffered a hamstring injury the next week, and would miss 4 games. Ultimately, Cook finished the 2018 season with 615 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. He also caught 40 receptions for 305 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cook took off in 2019. After spending much of the season as the reading rusher in the entire NFL, and earning multiple Offensive Player of the Week awards, Cook’s production slowed later on in the season, as he was dealing with a chest injury. Still, Cook finished the season with 1,135 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns to go along with 53 receptions for 519 receiving yards in 14 games; making for an incredible year.

In the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, Cook rushed 28 times for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns, and caught 3 passes for 36 yards during the 26–20 overtime win. However, Cook would struggle in the Vikings’ next game, recording only 18 rushing yards in a Vikings loss. Cook was named to the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Cook followed up his stellar 2019 season with another excellent 2020 campaign. In the 14 games Cook played during the regular season, he finished with a career-high 1,557 rushing yards (despite missing a game due to injury, and missing the last game of the season due to the death of his father) and 16 touchdowns, plus 361 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. He was also named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl.

Despite the Vikings struggling in 2021 (they went 8-9 and missed the playoffs), Cook still performed well; finishing the year with249 carries for 1,159 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns to go along with 34 receptions for 224 receiving yards, and went to his third straight Pro Bowl.

And his solid production continued in 2022. For the first time in his career, Cook managed to stay healthy for the entire regular season, and finished the year with 1,173 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns, 39 receptions for 295 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns. The Vikings made the 2022 NFL playoffs, but lost in the Wild Card Round. At season’s end, Cook was named to his fourth straight Pro Bowl.

On June 9, 2023, the Vikings announced that they had released Cook (because of contractual disputes, not because of on-field performance.) And on August 15, 2023, Cook signed the aforementioned contract with the New York Jets.

In 12 games with the Jets in 2023, Cook has 197 rushing yards, no touchdowns, 13 receptions, and 77 receiving yards, as he is mostly playing a back-up role Breece Hall.

Dalvin Cook 2023-24 Season Forecast

One wonders whether Dalvin Cook will be able to find his stride with the New York Jets. In all likelihood, Cook will continue to be New York’s back-up running back, and will sign somewhere else in the offseason, hoping to be a lead back once again. Although he is getting up there in age (in terms of the average NFL running back), Cook might still have some electricity in his legs. He had certainly experienced his fair share of injuries, but one imagines that Cook can still produce at the All-Pro level like he did from 2019-2022 — hence why Dalvin Cook’s future remains bright.
