Giannis Antetokounmpo 2023-24 Profile

Giannis Antetokounmpo — the 7 foot tall, 243 pound Forward for the Milwaukee Bucks — has ascended into superstardom; not only in the NBA or within the basketball community, but across the entire world. Aptly nicknamed “Greek Freak”, Giannis’ otherworldly physical attributes, insane athleticism, and world-class basketball talent has captivated the masses and made Giannis Antetokounmpo a household name. And the scariest part of it all for opposing teams and fanbases is that Giannis is only 28 years old — and has a whole lot of basketball ahead of him.

The sky is the limit for Giannis. And with the Milwaukee Bucks recently trading for fellow superstar Damian Lillard, his Busks seem perfectly positioned to return to their 2021 NBA Championship form — and in doing so, could help Giannis win his second Championship ring.

In this article, we’re going to discuss Giannis’ general information, his background before the NBA, how his NBA career has gone so far, and what to expect from Giannis in 2023-24.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Background

After spending much of his childhood hawking jewelry and handbags in the Athens street, Giannis started playing basketball in 2007. Since Giannis wasn’t technically a Greek citizen while living there, it wasn’t until receiving Greek citizenship in 2013, when he was 18, that he could leave Greece.

In 2011-12, Giannis began playing with the senior men’s team of Filathlitikos in Greece’s third-tier professional basketball league. Over 26 games in the 2012-13 season, he averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1 block per game.

On April 28, 2013, Antetokounmpo made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft. And on June 27, 2013, Giannis was drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Antetokounmpo’s NBA Career So Far

Giannis Antetokounmpo made his NBA debut on October 13, 2013, at the age of 18 years, 311 days — making him one of the youngest NBA players to ever debut. He averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks in 77 appearances during his rookie season. At the season’s end, he was named to the 2013-14 NBA All-Rookie second team.

It was during the 2015-16 season where Giannis began blossoming into the player he eventually became. His scoring average increased to 16.9 points per game, along with 7.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He also recorded his first career triple-double on February 22, 2016.

Giannis’ 2016-17 season was his breakout year. He scored 22.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game in this season. Giannis also made his first All-Star game, was named to the All-NBA Second Team (his first All-NBA honor), and won the NBA’s Most Improved Player award.

Then Giannis’ scoring average took another leap during the 2017-18 season, increasing to 26.9 points per game. He once again made the All-Star team and earned second team All-NBA honors. Despite an impressive performance in the first round of the 2018 NBA playoffs, Giannis’ Bucks lost to the Boston Celtics in seven games.

Giannis earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Month awards for October, November, December and February of the 2018-19 season. This was also the first season where the Milwaukee Bucks asserted themselves as a force in the Eastern Conference, finishing the regular season as the #1 seed. The Bucks went on to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the Toronto Raptors. Giannis finished the season averaging 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. At the end of the season, Giannis earned first team All-NBA honors and won his first NBA MVP award.

After the conclusion of the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, Giannis — whose scoring average increased to 29.5 points per game — won his second consecutive NBA MVP award, along with his only NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. The Bucks lost in the second round of the 2020 playoffs to the Miami Heat.

After re-signing with the Bucks on December 15, 2020, Giannis made his fifth straight All-Star team in the 2020-21 season, and won the All-Star Game MVP award after scoring 35 points on 16-16 shooting in the game. During the 2020-21 playoffs, Giannis averaged 30.2 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, and led the Milwaukee Bucks to win their first NBA Championship in 50 years — and the first NBA Championship of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s career. Giannis also won NBA Finals MVP.

Although Giannis scored the most points per game of his career during the 2021-22 NBA playoffs (31.7), the Bucks couldn’t defend their NBA title, losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Still, Giannis earned his fourth consecutive NBA All-Defensive First Team and fourth consecutive All-NBA First Team.

In the 2022-23 season, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored the most points per game of his career, with 31.1. On January 3, 2023, Antetokounmpo recorded a career-high 55 points, and he made his seventh consecutive All-Star team. While the Bucks finished the season with a league-leading 58-24 record, they were upset by the Miami Heat in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs — although Giannis missed most of the series with an injured back.

Giannis Antetokounmpo 2023-24 Season Forecast

It’s a near certainty that Giannis Antetokounmpo will have another excellent 2023-24 season. He will make the All-Star team, likely earn All-NBA First Team honors, and perhaps win his third NBA MVP award. But to Giannis, a season like that wouldn’t be considered a success without winning an NBA Championship as well.

And with the addition of Damian Lillard, Giannis now has the best supporting cast that he’s ever had. The Bucks are now favorites to win the Eastern Conference, and will likely remain frontrunners to win the NBA Championship as the 2023-24 season unfolds. The only question is whether Giannis will be able to elevate his Bucks enough to earn him his second Championship ring. He’s surely capable of doing so.
