Joey Gallo 2024 Profile
Joey Gallo — the 6 foot 5 inch, 250 pound free agent first basemen and outfielder — is the definition of a feast or famine hitter. In fact, Gallo was called “MLB’s Most Unusual Superstar” by Bleacher Report in 2019, after going a majority of the 2019 season having hit more home runs than singles. And considering his eye-popping strikeout numbers, it truly is all or nothing when Gallo comes to the plate. While this might be entertaining for some fans, at least one fanbase that Gallo has played for despised him because of it. Now, with Gallo being a free agent, it will be fascinating to see which teams decide whether Gallo’s massive upside is worth the lows that come along with it.
In this article, we’ll discuss Joey Gallo’s general information, his background before the MLB, how his MLB career has gone so far, and what we can expect from him in 2024.

Joey Gallo Background
Joey Gallo attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a senior, Gallo hit for a .509 batting average with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs in 114 at bats. Across his high school career, Gallo hit a Nevada high school record 67 career home runs in 446 at bats. He was named Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and a High School All-American once his senior season ended.
Gallo committed to play college baseball at Louisiana State University (LSU). But after being selected in the first round, with the 39th overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers, Gallo elected to forego college and instead signed with the Rangers for a $2,250,000 signing bonus.
Gallo began his professional career with the Rangers’ Rookie league affiliate, where he hit .293 with 18 home runs and 52 RBIs in 150 at bats. The 18 home runs were an Arizona League record, and he was named Arizona League MVP. He was then promoted to the Rangers’ Class A team, hitting .214 with 4 home runs and 26 strikeouts in 56 at bats while there.
In the 2013 season, Gallo batted .251 with 40 home runs and 172 strikeouts in 411 at bats between 2 minor league teams — which won him the Joe Bauman Home Run Award for hitting the most home runs in minor league baseball for the 2013 season.
Gallo began the 2014 season with the Rangers’ High-A team, batting .323 and leading the league with 21 home runs, while also striking out 64 times in 189 at bats. He was then promoted to the Rangers’ AA team and played in the All-Star Futures Game soon after, where he was named MVP. Between the 2 minor league teams, he batted .271 with 42 home runs and 179 strikeouts in 439 at bats.
Gallo began the 2015 season in the minor leagues. And then on July 1, 2015, the Rangers promoted Gallo to the major leagues.
Joey Gallo’s MLB Career So Far
Gallohit a home run and drove in 4 runs in his first MLB game on June 2, 2015; becoming the first Ranger to achieve 4 RBIs in an MLB debut game. Later that month, Gallo was sent back down to the minors. In the minors in 2015, he batted .240 with 23 home runs and 139 strikeouts in 321 at bats, and in the majors, he batted .204 with 6 home runs and 57 strikeouts in 108 at-bats.
Gallo spent most of 2016 in the minor leagues, only playing in 17 Rangers games. In 25 at bats in the majors that season, Gallo struck out 19 times and got 1 hit (a home run).
2017 was the first year where Gallo started the season with the Rangers, and would remain on the big league team throughout the season. For the year, he batted .209 with 196 strikeouts (second in the American League), 41 home runs (third in the league), and 80 RBIs in 449 at bats. He also hit the longest MLB home run of the year, with a 490 foot moonshot.
In 2018, Gallo batted .206 hit 40 home runs (third in the league), drove in 92 runs, and struck out 207 times in 148 games.
In 2019, Gallo became the fastest player in American League history to reach 100 home runs, doing so in his 377th career game (but that record has since been broken.) Gallo also set an MLB record by recording the fewest career singles (93) at the time of reaching the 100 home run mark. After an excellent start to the year, where Gallo was selected to the MLB All-Star game, he suffered a broken hand on July 25, which ended his 2019 season. Gallo finished the campaign hitting .253 with 22 home runs and 49 RBI over 297 plate appearances in 70 games.
During the 57-game shortened 2020 season (due to the Pandemic), Gallo finished the season batting .181 with 10 home runs. He also won his first Gold Glove this season, as a right fielder.
Gallo was traded to the New York Yankees on July 29, 2021, at the MLB trade deadline. He was selected to the MLB All-Star Game, won a second consecutive Gold Glove, participated in the 2021 MLB Home Run Derby, and finished the season hitting .181 with 38 home runs, 77 RBIs, 111 walks (which led the MLB), and 213 strikeouts (which also led the MLB) in 616 at bats over 153 games (although most of his success came with the Rangers in the first half of the season, before he was traded to the Yankees.)
Gallo struggled with the Yankees to start the 2022 season, and caught a lot of criticism from Yankee fans and media for his poor performance. In 82 games for the Yankees in 2022, he batted a career low .159 with 12 homers and 24 RBIs. Ultimately, Gallo was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 2, 2022. He played in 44 games for the Dodgers, hitting .162 with 7 homers and 23 RBIs.
The Minnesota Twins signed Gallo on December 20, 2022. In 332 at bats with Minnesota in the 2023 season, Gallo hit .177 with 21 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 142 strikeouts. He became a free agent following the season.
In case you’re wondering about Gallo’s postseason success, it’s nonexistent. Gallo only has 4 career postseason at bats (in 2021 with the Yankees), and has never recorded a hit in the postseason.
Joey Gallo 2024 Season Forecast
It’s difficult to gauge what Joey Gallo’s market will look like this offseason. Considering that his batting average has plummeted in recent years, the fact that he is hitting less home runs than he used to in the earlier stages of his career, and that he has zero postseason success makes paying him a lot money not overly intriguing. Still, Gallo is a proven power hitter, and might have the most natural pop out of any player in the MLB. If he could find a way to get his strikeouts down and make more contact, he surely will have a place in the middle of some MLB team’s lineup. But he’ll need to address the holes in his swing if he ever wants to earn the superstar money that he seemed destined to receive at the beginning of his career.
