Shaedon Sharpe 2023-24 Profile

Although he’s only 20 years old and about to enter his second NBA season, Shaedon Sharpe has already proven that few players in the league can match the athleticism, basketball intuition, and star potential that he possesses. While the Portland Trail Blazers’ 6 foot 5, 200 pound Shooting Guard still has much developing to do before he realizes that star potential, Portland fans have to be thrilled with what Sharpe showcased in his rookie season. But with that first year success comes the expectation that he’ll improve in 2023-24 — and only time will tell whether he can do so.

Before Sharpe’s second season begins, let’s take a closer look at his upbringing, how he fared in 2022-23, and look ahead to what we can expect for his 2023-24 campaign.

Shaedon Sharpe Background

Shaedon Sharpe was born on May 30, 2003, in London, Ontario, Canada. After being raised and starting high school in Ontario, Sharpe decided to move around and try a few different high schools both in Canada and in the United States after freshman year. Clearly doing so benefitted his basketball game, as Sharpe was a consensus five-star recruit and was previously the number one ranked player in the 2022 recruiting class. And on September 7, 2021, Sharpe committed to playing college basketball at the University of Kentucky.

However, Sharpe never played a game for the Kentucky Wildcats. On April 21, 2022, Shaedon Sharpe declared for the 2022 draft, forgoing his remaining college eligibility.

Sharpe was drafted 7th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, by the Portland Trail Blazers. And that’s where his NBA career began.

Sharpe’s Rookie Season

Shaedon Sharpe’s professional basketball career got off to a rocky start. On July 8, 2022, in his NBA Summer League debut (and first professional game), Sharpe suffered a shoulder injury after just six minutes of play. An MRI later revealed a small labral tear in his left shoulder, and Sharpe was unable to play for the rest of the Summer League.

But Sharpe returned in time for the first game of the Blazers’ 2022-23 season. After not playing during his one year at Kentucky, many weren’t sure whether Sharpe would be ready for NBA action right away. Yet, after scoring 12 points in a Blazers 115-108 win on that opening day, he ended that speculation quickly.

Sharpe went on to have a solid first season with the Trail Blazers, averaging 9.9 points per game, 3 rebounds per game, 1.2 assists per game, and shooting 47.2% from the field, 36% from three-point range, and 71.4% at the free throw line — all while coming off of the bench for most of the season. Yet, as the Blazers disappointing season unfolded, the team’s attention turned toward the future — and with (former) Trail Blazers star Point Guard Damian Lillard sidelined, this meant Sharpe could showcase his skills as the team’s main scorer. In fact, Sharpe was inserted into the starting lineup near the end of the season, and went on to average  23.7 points in the final 10 games of the season.

Sharpe’s progression throughout the season, and his scoring proficiency to end it, showed the Trail Blazers that their 7th overall pick is a cornerstone in their future.

Shaedon Sharpe 2023-24 Season Forecast

Sharpe showed much promise during his rookie season, which has Portland fans excited for the future. His continued improvement and growth of his offensive skillset (he eventually was able to create offense for himself off the dribble, after relying on being passed the ball) throughout the season has many convinced that he’s the Trail Blazers’ next big thing.

However, the Trail Blazers aren’t likely to be a good team this year — especially because Damian Lillard, their best player, has just been traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.

While this means that Shaedon Sharpe will have all the opportunities in the world to lead the team, it also means that opponents will be focusing on him. Now that teams have seen what Sharpe can do, they’ll have a better idea of how to defend him during his second season. Because of this, Sharpe has hopefully been improving his game all summer long so he can make the necessary steps in development that both the Trail Blazers and the rest of the NBA is expecting from him.

Personally, I believe Shaedon Sharpe will make that leap. Sharpe is in prime position for a breakout 2023-24 season, and could even be in consideration to win the NBA’s Most Improved Player of the Year award by season’s end.

As for Sharpe’s stats, I expect him to score somewhere around 20 points her game in 2023-24 (which would be double what he scored per game as a rookie, even though he averaged over 20 in his last ten games), produce around the same number of rebounds as last year, and have his assists slightly improve as well. But where Sharpe’s game will likely improve most is behind the three-point arc. As the team’s focal point, he’ll be taking (and making) many more shots. This will help his points her game average immensely.

What’s for sure is that Shaedon Sharpe has given Trail Blazers fans a lot to look forward to in 2023-24. Whether he blossoms into the team’s next superstar now that Damian Lillard is gone is still up for debate — but the sky is the limit for Shaedon Sharpe.
