Trevor Zegras 2023-24 Profile

Trevor Zegras, a six-foot center, is the best player on the Anaheim Ducks. The 22-year-old is going into his fourth season in the NHL, hoping to take his game to another level.

Zegras was drafted ninth overall in 2019 by the Ducks but did not join them until the following season. He quickly became the most exciting player on the Ducks team, being a regular on the highlight reels with his goals and assists.

However, he has not reached the Playoffs in his first three seasons in the league, and the Ducks hope they will reach the postseason for the first time since 2018.

Trevor Zegras General Information

Trevor Zegras was born in Bedford, New York, on March 20, 2001. His parents are of Greek descent, and Zegras does not hide his pride in his roots.

He started skating at the age of three and soon started playing hockey with his older cousins. Zegras was a huge New York Rangers fan, even though he pointed out Patrick Kane as his idol growing up.

Trevor Zegras Background

Zegras played bantam major hockey with the Mid Fairfield Rangers before joining the Avon Old Farms school’s Winged Beavers of the Founders League.

During his tenure with the Winged Beavers from 2016 to 2017, Zegras recorded 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points. As a sophomore at Avon Old Farms, Zegras attended the USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s Top 40 tryout and qualified for the team.

Zegras joined the USNTDP Under-17 team for their 2017–18 season in the USHL, where he recorded 20 goals and 39 assists for 59 points.

Following the season, he joined their Under-18 team in the 2018–19 season, where he scored 26 goals and 61 assists for a total of 87 points.

As an outcome of his outstanding USHL performance, Zegras was drafted ninth overall by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Despite his draft selection, Zegras kept his commitment to play NCAA Division I ice hockey for Boston University.

He played in 33 games for the Terriers, finishing tied for third among Division I freshmen in points with 36. He was named to the Hockey East Third Team All-Star, selected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, and named a finalist for Hockey East Rookie of the Year.

Trevor Zegras’ NHL Career So Far

Zegras made his NHL debut with the Ducks in 2021. In his first entire NHL season, Zegras was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year while generating massive popularity for his flashy stick skills. The highlight of the season was the “Michigan goal” with teammate Sonny Milano in a January 2022 game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Last season, Zegras led the Ducks in scoring with 23 goals and 65 points in 81 games. He became the second player in Ducks history to reach 60 points multiple times before age 23, following Hall of Famer Paul Kariya.

However, the highlight of his young career was the pass he made to Milano in the game against Buffalo. With five Sabres’ defenders surrounding their net, Zegras moved the puck back and forth before lifting the disc onto his stick while being behind the net. Instead of attempting a lacrosse-style shot into the top corner of the net, which is another of his signature moves, Zegras lofted a pass over the goal cage and Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen toward Sonny Milano, the lone offensive player in that herd of Buffalo defenders. Milano knocked it into the net for the NHL season’s most spectacular scoring play and a career-defining moment for Zegras.

That move was something that every kid playing hockey was trying to recreate, which launched Zegras among the top NHL stars and made him the cover athlete for the EA NHL 2023 video game.

Trevor Zegras 2023-24 Season Forecast

The Ducks hired Pat Verbeek as their general manager in February 2022, hoping that he would bring back the glory days to Anaheim. He brought in Greg Cronin as the new head coach going into the season and, most importantly, signed Zegras to a contract extension.

Still, the negotiations did not go so smoothly, as the two sides needed more than two weeks to negotiate the deal. However, there is no doubt that Zegras is the best player on the Ducks team, and with him being only 22 years old, the team expects him to take over the leadership role that may bring the team back to the Playoffs for the first time after five poor seasons.
