Let’s take a look at Smith’s upbringing, his NFL career so far, what he’s accomplished and what we can expect from him in the 2023-24 season.

Za’Darius Smith Background

Za’Darius Smith was born on September 8, 1992, in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended Greenville High School where he primarily played basketball. Smith did not start playing football until his senior year.

Smith attended East Mississippi Community College for two years before transferring to the University of Kentucky. Whilst at East Mississippi, he recorded 66 tackles and 11 sacks which earnt him his transfer. He was the nation’s No.1 junior college strongside defensive end prospect and the nation’s No.10 overall junior college prospect.

At Kentucky, as a Junior, Smith started all 12 games, recording 59 tackles and six sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. He ranked seventh in the SEC. As a senior in 2014, he had 60 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Smith earnt himself an invitation to the 2015 Senior Bowl and declared for the 2015 NFL Draft. Scouts and analysts had him ranked as the 12th best defensive end prospect.

Smith was eventually drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with the 122nd overall pick.

Za’Darius Smth’s NFL Career So Far

Smith initially began the season as a backup weakside linebacker behind Terrell Suggs. He made his professional debut on September 20, 2015, during which he played 33 snaps and recorded one tackle. In Week 4, Smith made a season-high two sacks when he sacked Steelers quarterback Michael Vick in back-to-back plays. He finished his rookie season with 30 tackles, 5.5 sacks, nine QB hurries and two passes batted.

Over the next three years with Baltimore Smith played 43 games but only started 16 of them. In four years, he recorded 119 tackles and 17.5 sacks. His most productive season came in his last season with the Ravens in 2018. He started eight of the 16 games and finished with a career high 45 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He led the Ravens in sacks that season.

In 2019, Smith signed a four-year $66 million dollar deal with the Green Bay Packers, he was entering his prime playing year’s and he saw an uptick in his production. In his debut as a Packer, he recorded three tackles and a sack. This would end up being Smith’s most successful season so far, finishing with career highs 55 tackles and 13.5 sacks. He reached the playoffs with the Packers and earned his first Pro Bowl selection.

Smith’s 2020 season was just as much of a success, he ended the season with 52 tackles and 12.5 sacks earning him another Pro Bowl and he made the 2020 All-Pro Team second team.

Regrettably, Smith endured a setback during the 2021 season due to a persistent back injury, which ultimately led to his placement on injured reserve (IR) for a significant duration. Despite this, he made a comeback for the Packers’ first playoff game, where he managed to secure a sack on his initial snap since Week 1 of that season. Following the season’s conclusion, the Packers released Smith to conserve $15.3 million in salary cap space.

Last year, in 2022 Smith signed a three-year $42 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Smith played every game and recorded 44 tackles and 12 snaps. He was awarded the NFC Defensive Player of the Month in October and eventually earnt himself another Pro-Bowl.

In 2023, Smith is currently playing for the Cleveland Browns, acquired in a trade that involved the exchange of two fifth-round picks for 2025 sixth and seventh round picks along with Smith.

Za’Darius Smith’s 2023-2024 Season Forecast

Smith is part of a tough AFC North division but that’s not anything new to him as a former Raven. He forms a frightening partnership with Myles Garrett. The Browns are hoping that with Smith on one end, and Garrett on the other, they’ll have the opposition quarterbacks running for their lives.

With the Browns selling everything to get DeShawn Watson at quarterback, their trade for Smith is a sign of intent that they think they can compete this year. With only two playoff appearances in the 21st century, the Browns will be hoping that Smith can help lead them back there and hopefully much further.
