Anthony Edwards exhibits strong performance in his early NBA career. He’s had a notable presence on the offensive end, as reflected by his high points-per-game average. His stats show consistent improvement year after year, with the most recent season being his most productive, both in terms of scoring and overall contributions on the court. His shooting efficiency, both from inside and beyond the arc, has seen improvement, highlighting his versatility as a scorer. One area of potential enhancement might be reducing turnovers, but considering his usage and ball-handling responsibilities, it’s a reasonable number. Overall, Edwards has demonstrated significant potential and will likely continue to be a vital piece for the Timberwolves in the coming years.

Anthony Edwards 2023-24 Profile

Anthony Edwards — the 6 foot 4, 225 pound Shooting Guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves — could become the face of basketball in the coming years. The 22 year old superstar has already proved that the Timberwolves using their 1st overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft on him was a wise choice, and Edwards still has plenty of years to continue to progress and develop his (already polished) game. In fact, the only questions that remains about Anthony Edwards is whether he will be able to win while in Minnesota — a franchise that has struggled to produce championship-caliber teams. With the amount of money they’re now paying him, the Timberwolves are certainly expecting Edwards will bring them success.

In this article, we’ll discuss Anthony Edwards’ general information, his life before the NBA, how his professional career has gone so far, and what to expect from him in 2023-24.

Anthony Edwards General Information

Anthony DeVante Edwards was born on August 5, 2001, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. His parents are Yvette Edwards and Roger Caruth. Both Yvette and Anthony’s grandmother, Shirley, died of cancer in 2015, which forced Anthony — who was in 8th grade at the time — to be raised by his sister, Antoinette, and his brother, Antoine.

Anthony Edwards is currently dating Jeanine Robel. While the couple have been dating for a while, it is unknown when exactly their relationship started.

On July 8, 2023, Edwards signed a five-year, $260 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves — making for an annual average salary of $52 million. Edwards’s net worth is estimated to be around $14 million.

Anthony Edwards wears jersey number 5, and wears a size 11 (US) shoe.

Anthony Edwards Background

While Anthony Edwards spent much of his childhood playing football (becoming one of the country’s best youth running backs), he switched his focus to basketball once he became a teenager because he, “thought it looked more fun.”

Edwards began playing high school basketball at Therrell High School. In early 2017, Edwards transferred to Holy Spirit Preparatory High School. By the end of Edwards’s senior season at Holy Spirit, he averaged 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. He earned USA Today All-USA first team honors, and played in the McDonald’s 2019 All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

By the end of his high school career, Anthony Edwards was considered a top-five player in his 2019 recruiting class and the #1 overall shooting guard. On February 11, 2019, he committed to play college basketball for the University of Georgia.

Edwards produced an excellent freshman season at Georgia. In that 2020 season, he averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, and scored the most points out of any freshmen nationally. He earned second-team All-SEC and SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

Once his freshman season ended, Edwards decided to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft. And on November 18, 2020, Anthony Edwards was selected with the 1st overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Edwards’s NBA Career So Far

Anthony Edwards made his NBA debut on December 23, 2020, and put up15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 25 minutes. On March 18, 2021, Edwards scored a then career-high 42 points, along with seven rebounds and three assists (becoming the third youngest player to score 40+ points in NBA history). Edwards finished his rookie season averaging 19.3 points, 4,7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 32.1 minutes per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished second in NBA Rookie of the Year voting.

On November 10 of his second season, Edwards scored a then career-high 48 points on seven three-pointers. On January 25, 2022, Edwards became the first player in NBA history to record a stat line of at least 40 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals, and 5 three-pointers in a single game. He finished the regular season averaging 21.3 points, 4,8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

Edwards’ Timberwolves made the 2022 playoffs after earning the Western Conference’s #7 seed. In Edwards’ playoff debut on April 16, 2022, he logged 36 points and 6 assists in a win against the Memphis Grizzlies — although the Timberwolves would lose the series in six games. Edwards averaged 25.2 points and shot 40.4% from three-point range throughout the series.

But Edwards had his true breakout season in 2023. After an excellent first half of the season, Edwards was named to his first ever All-Star team. He went on to average 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game during the regular season (all career highs), and the Timberwolves made the playoffs once again, as the #8 seed in the Western Conference.

Edwards put up 41 points in Game 2 of the Timberwolves first round series against the Denver Nuggets, which set the Timberwolves franchise record for most points scored in a playoff game. Although the Timberwolves were eliminated in five games by the Nuggets (who went on to win the 2023 NBA Championship), Edwards shined in the series, averaging 31.6 points per game.

Edwards was also a member of the United States national team that competed in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He was the leading scorer for the US by averaging 18.9 points per game, and was selected in the All-FIBA World Cup Team.

Anthony Edwards 2023-24 Season Forecast

Anthony Edwards has improved every single season of his NBA career in points, rebounds, assists, and field goal percentage. And considering how high his ceiling seems to be, there’s no reason to think that Edwards won’t improve more in 2023-24; perhaps even increasing his points per game to around 27-28. If Edwards was to do so, this would cement himself as one of the game’s most elite players — and could even catapult the Timberwolves into playoff contention. Regardless of how Minnesota’s season goes, Edwards will surely dominate whenever he is on the floor, will continue to grow as a leader, and will keep rounding out and developing his already impressive game. Although Anthony Edwards broke out in 2023, he might finish the 2024 season as one of the world’s premiere players.
