Edwin Díaz started playing baseball at age 7 in Puerto Rico, and started out mostly as a center fielder. At around age 16, Díaz joined the Caguas Military Academy out of Caguas, Puerto Rico — which is a popular academy for Puerto Rico’s most talented youth baseball players. Díaz soon focused solely on pitching instead of playing outfield, and continued to hone his skillset during his time at Caguas. Eventually, he caught the attention of MLB scouts in the area, who were convinced that Díaz was a can’t-miss prospect. And on June 4, 2012, Edwin Díaz was selected in the third round (the 98th overall pick) of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.

Díaz’s minor league career began once he was sent to play rookie-ball with the Arizona League Mariners after getting drafted. While there, Díaz pitched in nine games and went 2–1 with a 5.21 Earned Run Average (ERA) with 20 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched.
