Evan Mobley has shown considerable promise in his initial years in the NBA. Not only has he played and started in all the games of his career thus far, but his stats reflect a player with a balanced skill set. He has a significant presence on both ends of the court, with notable rebounding, blocking, and scoring capabilities. His field goal percentage, especially, indicates his proficiency in shot selection and execution. The only area of potential improvement might be his three-point shooting, but given his position and role, it’s not a major concern.
Evan Mobley 2023-24 Profile
Evan Mobley — the 6 foot 11, 222 pound Power Forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers — is still in the early stages of his NBA career. Yet, considering his playing style, basketball intelligence, and the way he carries himself on the court, someone watching Evan Mobley for the first time would likely assume he has been in the NBA for years. While this isn’t the case, the fact that Mobley’s maturity shines through is surely a sign of good things to come in his career. And with the Cavaliers being one of the youngest, most talented teams in the Eastern Conference, Mobley’s future is looking very bright. That being said, Mobley still has some facets of his game that could use improving if he’s to reach his true potential.
In this article, we’re going to discuss Evan Mobley’s general information, his background before he reached the NBA, how his two-year NBA career has gone so far, and what to expect from Mobley’s 2023-24 campaign.

Evan Mobley Background
Evan Mobley and his older brother, Isaiah, began playing basketball at a young age, because their father was a basketball coach. Although Evan was initially reluctant to take to the sport, the fact that he was 6 foot 4 by 8th grade made the game come easy to him.
Mobley went to high school at Rancho Christian School in Temecula, California. As a junior at Rancho Christian, Mobley averaged 19.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.7 blocks per game. He was named California Gatorade Player of the Year and The Press-Enterprise Player of the Year once that season ended.
As a senior at Rancho Christian, Mobley averaged 20.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 5.2 blocks, and 4.6 assists per game, leading Rancho Christian to a 22–8 record. He also won his second consecutive California Gatorade Player of the Year Award, as well as Morgan Wootten National Basketball Player of the Year award. He was slotted to play in the 2020 McDonald’s All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, and the Nike Hoop Summit, but all three were cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
Mobley was considered the #3 overall recruit in his 2020 class, and the #1 player at his position. On August 5, 2019, he committed to play college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC).
Mobley scored 21 points and had nine rebounds in his college debut, and produced multiple 20-plus point performances during his 2020-21 freshman season at USC. By season’s end, Mobley had averaged 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 2.4 assists per game — all of which was good enough to earn him Pac-12 Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman Player of the Year honors, and made him a consensus second-team All-American.
After an unexpected run in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Mobley’s USC Trojans lost in the Elite Eight to Gonzaga. Once the season ended, Mobley announced his intention to declare for the 2021 NBA Draft. And on July 29, 2021, Mobley was selected with the third overall pick of the 2021 Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Mobley’s NBA Career So Far
Mobley made his NBA debut on October 20, 2021, and put up 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. He was named the NBA Eastern Rookie of the Month for games played in October/November, and on December 8, Mobley became the first Cleveland rookie since LeBron James to record five blocks in an NBA game.
By the end of his rookie season, Mobley had averaged 15.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 0.8 steals per game, on 33.8 minutes per game played. He led all NBA rookies in both blocks and rebounds per game, and finished fifth in scoring for rookies. Mobley was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, and finished as the runner-up in NBA Rookie of the Year voting, behind Scottie Barnes.
Evan Mobley improved in his second NBA season in nearly every metric. On January 21 of this 2022-23 season, Mobley scored a career-high 38 points on 19-of-27 shooting from the field, along with nine rebounds and three assists. In doing so, he became only the fourth player since 1979 to score at least 38 points without making a free throw or 3-pointer.
Mobley finished the 2022-23 season averaging 16.2 points, 9 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 2.8 assists per game. He finished third in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting, and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team.
In the five playoff games Mobley played in during that 2022-23 season, he averaged 9.8 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.
Evan Mobley 2023-24 Season Forecast
Evan Mobley has proven himself to be a core part of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ roster for years to come. While he is as elite as they come on the defensive end of the floor, there are a few ways he can improve his offensive game. With other scorers like Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland on his team, Mobley doesn’t need to do much more scoring than the 15-16 points per game he has averaged in his career thus far (although the Cavaliers would love if he did). Yet, Mobley has sometimes struggled with shot selection. He has been known to make hasty and ill-advised shots at times, which has brought down his shooting percentage. While this isn’t a major issue, it’s certainly something that Mobley can improve upon during the 2023-24 season. And if he does so, there’s a good chance he’ll find himself on the 2024 Eastern Conference All-Star Team.
