Julius Randle 2023-24 Profile

Julius Randle — the 6 foot 8, 250 pound power forward for the New York Knicks — has spent his NBA career in the spotlight. Having played the vast majority of his professional career on two of the biggest market teams that the NBA has to offer (not to mention being a highly touted draft pick for one of those teams, which comes with its own pressure), Randle is no stranger to high expectations — nor criticism, for the relatively limited skillset that he entered the NBA with. Yet, as the saying goes, pressure makes diamonds; and Julius Randle has been hardened into one of the most reliable, underrated, and well-rounded forwards in the entire league. Now the question is whether Randle can help the New York Knicks achieve their long awaited NBA Championship aspirations.

In this article, we’ll discuss Julius Randle’s general information, his background before NBA fame, how his career has gone thus far, and what we can expect to see from him in 2023-24.

Julius Randle General Information

Julius Deion Randle was born on November 29, 1994, in Dallas, Texas, USA. His parents are Matthew Randle and Carolyn Kyles — although Randle was raised solely by his mother, Carolyn.

Julius Randle is married to Kendra Randle. The couple met while they were students at the University of Kentucky, and got married in 2017. The couple have two sons together.

On August 26, 2021, Julius Randle signed a 4 year, $117,089,280 contract with the New York Knicks — which makes for an average annual salary of $29,272,320. Julius Randle’s net worth is estimated to be $25 million.

Julius Randle wears jersey number 30, and wears a size 14 (US) shoe.

Julius Randle Background

Julius Randle attended high school at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas, and led his team to 3 state titles in 4 years. As a senior in 2012–13, Randle averaged 32.5 points and 22.5 rebounds per game and played in the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game.

Randle was considered one of the very best recruits in his high school class. In fact, Randle was listed as the No. 1 power forward and the No. 2 player in the nation in 2013 by Rivals.com. And on March 20, 2013, Randle committed to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky.

Randle had a brief but memorable tenure at Kentucky. In 40 games (all starts) in that 2013-14 season, he averaged 15.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 30.8 minutes per game, was named a semi-finalist for the Naismith College Player of the Year award, won both SEC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-SEC, and helped Kentucky reach the national championship game (which they lost to the University of Connecticut.)

After his freshman season ended, Randle announced his intention to declare for the 2014 NBA draft. And on June 26, 2014, Julius Randle was selected with the seventh overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Julius Randle’s NBA Career So Far

Julius Randle made his NBA debut on October 28, 2014 — and broke his leg after just 14 minutes of playing time. He would need to get surgery to repair the leg, and would miss the entire 2014-15 season as a result.

Randle returned exactly one year later, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the first game of the 2015-16 season. On March 25, 2016, he recorded his first ever triple-double in a loss to the Denver Nuggets (becoming the youngest Laker to get a triple double since Magic Johnson). He went on to average 11.3 points and 10.2 rebounds in 81 games played that season.

While Randle’s scoring average increased to 13.2 points per game in the 2016-17 campaign, his rebounds dropped to 8.6 per game. His field goal percentage did increase about 6%, however.

Randle began the 2017-18 season coming off the bench for the Lakers, but took over as a starter about midway through the season. In what was another disappointing year for the Lakers (every Lakers team that Randle played on were NBA bottom dwellers), Randle did produce a solid individual season; playing in all 82 games and averaging 16.1 points and 8 rebounds per game.

After becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2017-18 season, Randle signed with the New Orleans Pelicans for 2018-19. Although Randle showed marked improvements in the season, averaging 21.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, he elected to become a free agent again once the season ended.

Randle signed with the New York Knicks prior to the 2019-20 season — and New York is where Randle really started to excel. Despite missing a chunk of the 2019-20 season due to injury, Randle still produced 19.5 points per game and 9.7 rebounds in the 64 games he played in.

In 2020-21, Randle took off. His scoring average jumped to 21.1 points per game, he had 10.2 rebounds per game, made his first ever All-Star team, won the NBA’s Most Improved Player award, and was named to the All-NBA Second Team at the end of the regular season.

This season was also the first time Randle ever made the playoffs. Yet, Randle only shot 29% from the field and averaged 18 points per game in these playoffs, as the Knicks lost in the first round. Randle received much scrutiny from the media after this poor playoff performance.

Unfortunately, Randle’s progress stagnated during the 2021-22 season. His scoring dropped 4 points, to 20.1 points per game, and his rebounds per game decreased to 9.9. The Knicks also didn’t make the playoffs in this season, which Randle was once again scrutinized for.

But Randle bounced back nicely in the 2022-23 season. After starting the season off very well, Randle was once again named to the All-Star team, and finished the season averaging a career high 25.1 points per game, to go along with 10 rebounds per game.

The Knicks made the playoffs in 2023 — and Randle experienced both good and bad games. Ultimately, Randle averaged 16.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in these 2023 playoffs, and his Knicks lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Julius Randle 2023-24 Season Forecast

While he has cemented himself as an elite forward in the NBA, Julius Randle still has a lot to prove. His detractors would say that he hasn’t shown up in the most important moments (the playoffs, namely) when his team has needed him most. Yet, since he has been in the league for so long, it’s easy to forget that Julius Randle is only 28 years old. He is just entering the prime of his career — and with a Knicks roster around him that is probably more talented than any other team he has ever been on, and who will most likely make the playoffs, this 2023-24 season seems like the perfect opportunity for Randle to take his game to the next level. There will be pressure, of course — but Julius Randle is used to that by now.
