Shohei Ohtani 2023-24 Profile
Shohei Ohtani — the 6 foot 4, 210 pound pitcher and designated hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers — could go down as the best baseball player in history. What’s for certain is that the MLB hasn’t seen such a multi-faceted, talented player such as Ohtani in over 100 years; and even then, Babe Ruth, the only player than Ohtani can really be compared to, isn’t close to the Japanese megastar, in terms of athleticism. Although an arm injury will keep Ohtani from pitching in 2024, the gigantic contract Ohtani signed with the Dodgers just a few weeks ago may seem like a bargain by the time this legend’s career is over.
In this article, we’ll discuss Shohei Ohtani’s general information, his pre-MLB background in Japan, what he’s accomplished in his MLB career thus far, and what we can expect to see from Ohtani in the future.
Shohei Ohtani General Information
Shohei Ohtani was born on July 5, 1994, in Oshu, Iwate, Japan. His parents are Toru and Kayoko Ohtani. Toru, Shohei’s father, was an amateur baseball player in Japan, and Kayoko, his mother, was an amateur badminton player.
While Shohei Ohtani keeps his private life very private, some believe that he is currently dating Kalamani Dung, who is a former college softball player and current social media influencer.
On December 9, 2023, Ohtani signed a 10-year, $70 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers — making for an average annual salary of $70 million. Ohtani’s estimated current net worth is $50 million.
Ohtani will wear jersey number 17 for the Dodgers, throws right-handed, and hits left-handed.
Shohei Ohtani Pre-MLB Background
Shohei Ohtani began playing baseball in his second year of elementary school. As a teenager, Ohtani attended Hanamaki Higashi High School in Iwate Prefecture, Northern Japan. As an 18 year old, Ohtani threw a 99 mph fastball, which was a Japanese high school baseball record at the time.
The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters drafted Ohtani in the 2012 NPB Draft, despite Ohtani declaring that he was going to pursue a professional career in Major League Baseball (MLB). Yet, Ohtani ultimately decided to pursue a career in Japan before going to the MLB.
Ohtani made his NPB debut at age 18 on March 29, 2013. For the season as a hitter, he was 3–0 with a 4.23 ERA, 33 walks, and 46 strikeouts in 61 2⁄3 innings. and as a hitter, hit .238 in 204 plate appearances.
In 2014 with Hokkaido, Ohtani batted .274, with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs in 212 at-bats. As a pitcher, he was 11–4 with a 2.61 ERA and 179 strikeouts (third in NPB) in 24 starts in 155.1 innings. During that All-Star game that year, Ohtani threw a 162 km/h (101 mph) fastball in the bottom of the first inning, setting a new record for the fastest official pitch thrown by a Japanese pitcher.
Ohtani mostly excelled as a pitcher in 2015. He started the All-Star game, and finished the season 15–5 with a 2.24 ERA, 196 strikeouts, and only 100 hits in 160 2⁄3 innings. As a hitter, he hit .202 with 5 home runs in 109 at-bats.
In 2016, Ohtani hit 22 home runs and batted .322 in 382 plate appearances. In 21 games pitched, he had a career-low ERA of 1.86, a 10–4 record, and struck out 174 batters in 140 innings. He won the NPB’s Pacific League MVP as a result.
Ohtani’s Hokkaido team made it to the Japan Series that year, and Ohtani hit .375 with 4 doubles during the series (he performed okay on the mound), and Hokkaido won the Japan Series championship.
In 2017, Ohtani played in 65 games, hitting .332 with 8 homers and 31 RBIs while posting a 3–2 record, a 3.20 ERA, and 29 strikeouts as a pitcher. He missed time due to an ankle injury (which also didn’t allow him to participate in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.)
After asking Hokkaido to post him to play in Major League Baseball after the 2017 season, the team adhered to his request. And on December 8, 2017, Ohtani agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Angels.
Shohei Ohtani’s MLB Career So Far
During his first MLB season with the Angels, in 2018, Ohtani had a batting average of .285, a .361 on-base-percentage, 22 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. In 10 starts on the mound, he notched a 4–2 record with a 3.31 ERA, and 63 strikeouts. In the process, Ohtani joined Babe Ruth as the only MLB players with 10 pitching appearances and 20 homers in a season.
In September 2018, Ohtani underwent Tommy John Surgery in his right elbow, which would mean he wouldn’t pitch until the 2020 season.
Therefore, Ohtani was relegated to being a hitter only in the 2019 season — where he finished the season batting .286 with 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases in 106 games.
Ohtani made his return to the mound on July 26, 2020—although he allowed five runs and was removed from the mound without recording an out. After his second start, Ohtani said he had discomfort in his arm, and therefore it was decided Ohtani would not pitch for the remainder of the 2020 season.
As a hitter in 2020, Ohtani finished the season batting .190 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 43 games (it was a shortened season due to COVID).
After a somewhat disappointing start to his MLB career (at least, in Ohtani’s opinion), Ohtani went on to have perhaps the best season in MLB history in 2021. He became the first player in MLB history to become an All-Star as both a hitter and a pitcher, participated in the home run derby, and finished his pitching campaign by making 23 starts on the mound, going 9–2 with a 3.18 ERA, 156 strikeouts, 1.09 WHIP, and 44 walks in 130 1/3 innings.
As a hitter, Ohtani batted .257, including 46 home runs (2nd most in MLB), 100 RBIs, 103 runs, and 26 steals in 155 games and 639 plate appearances. Ohtani was unanimously voted at the AL MVP after the season ended, and won Player of the Year by just about every media site that gives out such awards.
He also acquired two Guinness World Records titles that season: the first MLB player to achieve 100+ innings and record 100+ strikeouts as a pitcher, and 100+ RBIs, hits and runs as a batter in a single season, and the first player to start the All-Star Game as a pitcher and a hitter. The season was ranked as the best season in sports history by Sporting News.
Ohtani followed up his unbelievable 2021 season by making another All-Star game in 2022, as both a pitcher and a hitter — but he ended up not pitching in the game. As a pitcher, Ohtani finished the 2022 season with a 15–9 record, a 2.33 ERA, and 219 strikeouts in 166 innings. He also hit .273 with 34 homers, 30 doubles, 11 stolen bases, and 95 RBIs in 157 games.
Ohtani started the 2023 season by being named Most Valuable Player of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, which his Team Japan squad won and where Ohtani batted .435 as a hitter and posted a 1.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 9 2⁄3 innings as a pitcher. With the Angels, he was once selected to the All-Star Game as a pitcher and a hitter.
In late August 2023, it was revealed that Ohtani suffered a torn UCL in his elbow, which would require Tommy John surgery, and would not be able to pitch until 2025. He finished his 2023 season on the mound with a 10–5 record, posting a 3.14 ERA and striking out 167 batters. In 135 games as a hitter, he batted .304 with 44 home runs (leading the AL), 95 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Ohtani was named the unanimous AL MVP after the season ended, and also became a free agent.
On December 11, 2023, Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers — which was the largest contract in professional sports history. The contract was structured in such a way that $68 million per season was deferred until after the conclusion of the deal to be paid out from 2034 to 2043.
Shohei Ohtani Future Forecast
Ohtani is well on his way to becoming one of the greatest MLB players of all time. In fact, all that’s left for him to do is succeed in the postseason — which he was never able to do during his time with the Angels. Yet, now that Ohtani is on a stacked Dodgers team, he seems set up to win at least a couple World Series Championships. While that’s of course easier said than done, the Dodgers having Ohtani on their team for the next 10 years makes imminent success seem inevitable.
