Joel Embiid 2023-24 Profile
Although there’s much debate about who the NBA’s best Center is, Joel Embiid — the 7 foot, 280 pound Center for the Philadelphia 76ers — is who won the 2023 NBA MVP. And there is no debate that Embiid embodies the paint dominance, fleet footwork, shot-blocking ability, and scoring proficiency that only the world’s most elite Centers employ. In fact, if Embiid wasn’t so massive, his blend of athleticism and ability most likely would have made him an excellent guard.
Although “the Process” has yet to take his 76ers squad to the NBA Finals, Embiid still has a bright and lengthy future ahead of him. And perhaps 2023-24 is the season where his individual success can fuse with Philadelphia’s ambitions to win an NBA Championship.
In this article, we’ll discuss Joel Embiid’s general information, his pre-NBA background, break down his NBA career so far, and predict what we’ll see from him in the 2023-24 season.

Joel Embiid Background
After spending his childhood believing he would be a professional volleyball player in Europe, Joel Embiid began playing basketball at age 15. Embiid then moved to the United States at age 16 to devote himself to becoming a professional basketball player.
Embiid attended high school at Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, before transferring to The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida. As a senior in high school, Embiid averaged 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Embiid was considered a top recruit coming out of high school. And in November 2012, he committed to play college basketball at the University of Kansas.
In Kansas’s 2013-14 season, Embiid played 28 games and averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes per game. He earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was also named second-team Big 12—although a stress fracture in his back caused him to miss the NCAA tournament.
After that freshman season at Kansas, Embiid declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. And on June 26, 2014, Embiid was drafted by the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Joel Embiid’s NBA Career So Far
The first seasons of Joel Embiid’s career were plagued by injuries. He missed the entire 2014-15 season due to a broken bone in his foot, and then missed the entire 2015-16 season due to setbacks from that same foot injury.
On October 26, 2016, Embiid made his long-awaited NBA regular season debut, and recorded 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes. After what was an extremely promising start to the season, Embiid suffered a torn meniscus in his knee, and would miss the remainder of the 2016-17 season. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and a career-high 2.5 blocks in 31 games, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Embiid returned fully healthy to the 2017-18 season, and excelled as a result. He was named a starter for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, won multiple Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors during the season, and was named to his first All-NBA Second Team and NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
The 76ers made the playoffs in that season, and Embiid helped them advance to the second round, where they lost to the Boston Celtics. Embiid averaged 21.4 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in the 8 playoff games he played that year.
Embiid had another healthy, successful 2018-19 season, making his second All-Star Team, second All-NBA Second Team, NBA All-Defensive Second Team, and averaging 27.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. Yet, Embiid struggled in the playoffs (averaging 20 points per game), and his 76ers lost in the second round of the playoffs.
During the 2019-20 season, Embiid was once again an All-Star—but his scoring average dipped to 23 points per game, and his rebounds per game down to 11.6. Although Embiid averaged a playoff career-high 30 points per game during that year’s playoffs, the 76ers were eliminated in the first round.
Embiid finished the 2020-21 regular season with a (then) career-high 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 51 games played, and led the Sixers to the best record in the Eastern Conference. He would once again make the All-NBA Second Team, the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, and finish runner-up in NBA MVP voting. Yet, Philadelphia would lose to the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the playoffs, despite Embiid averaging 30.4 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the series.
Joel Embiid won his first NBA scoring title at the end of the 2021-22 regular season, after playing in 68 games and averaging 30.6 points per game—becoming first center to average over 30 points per game since 1982.
Despite playing most of the 2022 playoffs with a thumb injury that would ultimately require surgery, Embiid averaged 23.6 points and 10.7 rebounds throughout the playoffs. Yet, the 76ers would lose to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Embiid won his second consecutive scoring title in the 2022-23 season, upon scoring a whopping 33.1 points per game to go along with 10.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocks. At season’s end, Embiid earned All-NBA First Team honors for the first time in his career, as well as won his first ever NBA MVP award.
Unfortunately for Embiid, his 76ers faltered in the playoffs once again, losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 7 games. Embiid averaged 23.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in the playoffs.
Joel Embiid 2023-24 Season Forecast
Although Embiid has now earned every individual regular accolade that there is for him to gain, he still has never made it to the Eastern Conference Finals — let alone win an NBA Championship. And while it remains to be seen whether James Harden’s departure from the 76ers in the offseason will help or hinder the team, Embiid’s presence will always make Philadelphia a contender to make a deep playoff run. And if the 76ers’ 6-1 start to the 2023-24 NBA regular season is any indication, perhaps this is the year they’ll be able to break through and realize Embiid’s Championship dreams—finally fulfilling the prophecy that Embiid’s “the Process” nickname has produced.
